THE HISTORY OF THE ANCHORAGE AT SUNAPEE HARBOR

1904

Perley Graves built the “Temperance Drinks” store in 1901 that later became The Anchorage on land leased from Lucy Knowlton. He sold food and fishing tackle. In 1905 he expanded the building. The bay windows beside the front door are original and date from 1908.

1950

Ethel ran the store in the Harbor and Warren ran the boat livery in Burkehaven. In the late 1920s, Warren was the Dodge motorboat dealer and displayed boats from his Harbor dock. In 1938, the Morgans renovated, enclosing the porch for more dining space, adding booths, and updating the equipment.

1998

Over the next 40 years, ownership of the Anchorage has changed many times but has always stayed the Anchorage where many people from all over, including Steven Tyler, come for the great food and beautiful views!

1912

In 1912, Graves sold the business to Mott Bartlett who continued to lease the land and operated until 1920 when he sold the business to Ethel and Warren F. Morgan.

1951

In 1951, the Morgans sold the property to Wesley Hillbourne and Raymond F. Bohman, who made changes and renamed the business The Anchorage. Changes included upgrades to the soda fountain counter, new booths, a landscape mural in the porch dining room, and a game room in the rear wing.

2018

The Anchorage today, Norm Carlson purchased the Anchorage in 2018 and to this day stands by his commitment to enhance the historic landmark and return back to its artistic roots with unique entertainment from around the world!
